The Nuclear Waste Fund is currently used to "reduce the apparent deficit," the report said. It acknowledged that freeing up the money would be politically difficult. Through a process that involves nothing but heat , high pressure and natural dyes , Laurens developed a sturdy plastic that can be used in cups , eyewear and even decorative tiles . Much like using the keratin from waste chicken feathers to make plastics Laurens' process makes use of waste fish scales from the fishing industry , giving new life to something that would otherwise end up in the garbage . And while the thought of waste fish scales is kind of gross , the resulting products are

  • Greenland’s Ice Sheet May Be More Stable than Previously Thought

    Updated: 2011-07-29 17:31:00
Yale Environment 360: Research into the last prolonged warm spell on Earth — an interglacial period roughly 125,000 years ago — shows that Greenland’s ice sheet may be more stable and Antarctica’s less stable than previous studies have shown. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin conducted a detailed study of the behavior of Greenland’s ice sheet during the previous interglacial era and discovered that the melting of Greenland’s glaciers probably accounted for about half of the 13 to 20 foot increase in global sea...

During a two-year investigation, EIA agents from the UK-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), posing as timber buyers, found that a ban on the export of raw timber from Laos is regularly flouted, with an estimated 500,000 cubic meters of logs being funneled to Vietnamese furniture factories each year. The most "famous" decision recently has been to phase out nuclear power in the next ten years. This move builds on years of debate and a societal decision after Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident to move away from nuclear energy. There has been much less focus, however, on the phasing in of other sources of energy. Nor has there been much focus on...

  • When is 1 MWh of solar electricity equal to 1 SREC?

    Updated: 2011-07-22 16:13:10
Many definitions of solar renewable energy credits ("SRECs") say that an SREC is equivalent to one megawatt-hour (1,000 kilowatt hours) of electricity generated by a solar facility. While this is mostly true, it’s not always the case that 1 MWh of solar = 1 SREC. if a solar energy system is not registered with at least one state and registered with PJM GATS or NEPOOL GIS, the system may produce solar electricity without producing any SRECs. This is important because if no SREC is created, no SREC can be sold.
